The Project

We’ve always been fascinated by everyday public objects we depend on but seldom notice. The railway clock is one such presence always visible, yet quietly overlooked.

This project envisions a digital clock for Indian Railways that merges functionality with cultural symbolism, drawing inspiration from the Kalachakra. Designed to be clear, reliable, and durable for nationwide use, the clock ensures high visibility in busy railway stations while maintaining ease of installation. Beyond its utility, it is visually striking and emotionally engaging, evoking curiosity, pride, and connection. By reinterpreting the timeless philosophy of Kalachakra into a modern public object, the design transforms a simple clock into a symbol of trust, continuity, and cultural identity for millions of daily travelers.

Concept

Reimagining the railway clock as a symbol of cyclical time, clarity, and connection, inspired by the Kalachakra.

This design takes inspiration from the ancient Indian and Tibetan symbol of Kalachakra, or the “Wheel of Time.” Unlike conventional linear clocks, the Kalachakra embodies cyclical time where beginnings and endings merge seamlessly, much like the continuous movement of trains and the rhythms of life itself. In the setting of railway stations, the clock becomes more than a utility; it transforms into a cultural symbol. By blending mythology, identity, and function, the design turns a familiar public object into an experience that invites travelers to pause, observe, and reflect. It is both practical ensuring visibility, durability, and ease of use and poetic, evoking engagement and wonder in everyday journeys.

Final Design

This design is more than a clock; it’s a symbol that reconnects people with the flow of time, culture, and journeys—transforming an everyday object into an experience of clarity, rhythm, and identity.

The Kalachakra-inspired digital clock redefines the role of timekeeping in railway stations by blending functionality with cultural meaning. Drawing from the cyclical philosophy of the “Wheel of Time,” the design represents continuity, connection, and the seamless rhythm of life—mirroring the constant flow of trains and travelers. Crafted for high visibility, durability, and ease of installation, it serves not just as a utilitarian object but as a cultural marker that evokes pride and curiosity. The final design aspires to make every glance at the clock more than a routine check—it becomes a moment of reflection, engagement, and belonging in the collective journey of Indian Railways.
